A man in his 70s died after a fire broke out in a flat at Hang Fai Building in Sai Ying Pun on Monday evening, according to local news reports. About 60 residents evacuated the building.

Police received a report of the fire at the Pok Fu Lam Road building at 8:57 p.m. Firefighters found the man unconscious in the flat and took him to Queen Mary Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Standard reported that crews extinguished the fire at about 9:54 p.m.

The Fire Services Department believes the fire began in the flat’s kitchen, possibly during cooking, and does not regard it as suspicious, The Standard reported. The cause of the blaze and the man’s death remain under investigation.

Pok Fu Lam Road was temporarily closed in both directions between Third Street and Queen’s Road West while emergency crews worked, and several Citybus routes were diverted.
